With Flyover Country, you can learn about the areas you pass during your flight, hike, or road trip. The GPS tracking feature allows you to access offline geologic maps and interactive points of interest, including locations of fossils, core samples, and georeferenced Wikipedia articles visible from your window seat, road trip, or hiking trail.

Flyover Country is an offline mobile app funded by the National Science Foundation for geoscience outreach and data discovery. It offers interactive geologic maps from Macrostrat.org, fossil localities from Neotomadb.org and Paleobiodb.org, Wikipedia articles, offline base maps, as well as your GPS-determined location, altitude, speed, and heading. The app analyzes your flight path and caches relevant map data and points of interest, allowing you to access this information during your flight without the need for in-flight wifi. By downloading only the data related to your specific flight path, the app keeps cache sizes reasonable, ensuring a robust experience even without an internet connection.

While Flyover Country is commonly used on airplanes' window seats, it is also a fantastic tool for road trips, hiking, field trips, and geologic field work.
